Hand-cut fries and house-made chips remain a must-have in Metro Detroit, with many restaurants and food trucks focusing on these simple yet satisfying staples. They come in numerous forms, from classic salted fries to loaded plates draped with sauces, cheese, and other toppings. Their crunch and familiar appeal make them a go-to choice for many diners. Here are a few spots where these potatoes truly stand out…

Vinsetta Garage

27799 Woodward Avenue, Berkley

Vinsetta Garage has two standout fry options: Disco Fries (house-cut potatoes, Ellsworth cheese curds, whole grain mustard gravy, chili flakes, and scallions) and Tikka Fries (topped with chicken tikka masala, fresh mozzarella, and scallions). Fries also appear in the Chicken Tikka Taco, paired with cucumber, pickled onion, cilantro, and mint. Alongside these loaded fries, the menu includes pizzas, sandwiches, and burgers served in a historically repurposed garage.

Wright & Company

1500 Woodward Avenue, Floor 2, Detroit

Wright & Company is known for its stunning views of the downtown area, but its dishes bring just as much excitement. General Manager Roxanne Phillips shares, “Since we opened, almost 11 years ago now, we have always strived to provide a phenomenal experience to everyone who comes up our elevator.” A favorite starter here is the house-made potato chips with cheddar cheese sauce, bacon, tomato relish, and chives. Beyond that, the menu features shareable small plates, seafood, and seasonally rotating dishes, all served in a polished, loft-style space. “We have something for everyone! We look forward to continuing to serve Detroit for years to come.”

Blue Tractor BBQ & Brewery

207 East Washington Street, Ann Arbor

Blue Tractor BBQ & Brewery is a barbecue hotspot in Ann Arbor. This spot pairs each of its sandwiches with house barbecue chips. The menu highlights smoked pork, brisket, and chicken, with mac and cheese and ribs also available. Sandwiches built on brioche rolls and Texas toast are topped with pickles, coleslaw, and pickled red onion, depending on your selection. In-house craft beers complement the barbecue, while the crunchy chips offer a lighter contrast to slow-smoked meats.

K-Blocks BBQ

40 North Washington Street, Oxford

66880 Van Dyke Avenue, Washington

K-Blocks BBQ is a well-loved Metro Detroit spot that brings a taste of Texas to the Midwest. At their Washington location, you’ll find their house-made tortilla chips on the menu alongside tomato-roasted salsa, queso, and their Nola Seafood Dip (featuring shrimp, crab, crawfish, and cheese). This location also has house-made potato chips for Barnyard Nachos, layered with queso, pulled pork, jalapeños, and more. Available at both locations are their house BBQ chips, served with all sandwiches, whether you choose the Texas Grilled Cheese or the Brisket Reuben.

The Dixboro Project

5400 Plymouth Road, Ann Arbor

The Dixboro Project combines nature and inventive menus, nestled in a village of its own. “Whether you’re joining us for a refined, yet relaxed dining experience in Dixboro House or stopping by The Boro for freshly baked pastries, wood-fired pizzas, takeaway meals, and more, you’ll find a warm and nourishing atmosphere,” shares The Dixboro Team. Hand-cut fries come with items like The Dixboro Burger (olive-fed Michigan Wagyu, dijon, sesame seed potato roll), the Boro B.L.T., and fried chicken sandwich or can be ordered solo with garlic aioli. Polenta fries drizzled with hot honey and sprinkled with pecorino offer a different spin on the fry concept, and are exclusively available on the weekend brunch menu at the Dixboro House.

32275 Stephenson Highway, Madison Heights

Brothers Mike and Ahmad Nassar established Detroit 75 Kitchen at their family’s truck stop over 10 years ago, eventually growing into a local favorite with a second location. This spot triple-fries russet potatoes and serves them regular, Cajun, or garlic cilantro style, paired with roasted jalapeño ketchup. One favorite sandwich, the Russell Street Vegetarian, even features them between layers of smoked veggies, cheeses, tomatillo salsa, and garlic cilantro aioli.
